Athletic Therapy is a health care profession that specializes in the prevention, assessment and care of musculoskeletal disorders (muscles, bones, joints) especially as they relate to athletics and the pursuit of physical activity.

At Elite Sports Medicine, all Athletic Therapy assessments/reassessments are carried out by a Certified Athletic Therapist. Once the assessment is completed, the Athletic Therapist can assign the athletic therapy treatments to one of the other therapists in the clinic or provide the treatment themselves. When treatment is assigned at Elite Sports Medicine, it is assigned to qualified, certified/regulated health professionals who engage in ongoing communication and consultation with the Certified Athletic Therapist.

Kinesiologists work with people of all ages and physical abilities in many settings to help them achieve their health and wellness goals, and improve quality of life.

Certified Athletic Therapist /Registered Massage Therapist

​ As a certified athletic therapist, Kevin has experience working with clients from a variety of sports. He has completed school placements with Centennial College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology, as well as field coverage for the 2017 North American Indigenous Games, 2015 Canada Open of Taekwando, and 2015 World Cup of Short Track Speed Skating.

Kevin has a particular interest in baseball and softball injuries. He completed a season-long internship with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016. Since 2017 he has worked with Baseball Canada’s Junior National Team, including acting as head athletic therapist for the 2017 U18 WBSC World Cup. He also provided field coverage for the 2022 Canadian Futures Showcase hosted by the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy. He has completed continuing education courses on shoulder assessment/treatment and injuries in baseball players.

Kevin graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a BA in Kinesiology, and then attended the athletic therapy program at Sheridan College, graduating as valedictorian. He became a registered massage therapist in 2019 after completing his diploma from the Ontario College of Health and Technology.

Kevin enjoys implementing exercise and strengthening into his treatments, with particular interest in shoulder pathologies.

Athletic Therapist/Owner

As an Athletic Therapist and Owner, Matthew’s focus is to help athletic people stay active. He has good understanding of sports and the requirment’s of being active. He was the Athletic Therapist for Oshawa Generals for 10 seasons (2009-2019), in addition to working with volleyball, lacrosse and soccer clubs. His clientel consits of your weekend warriors, professional athlete’s, olympic athlete’s, and up and coming athlete’s. In 2014 He was also one of the Athletic Therapists for Hockey Canada’s World Under 17 team. He is currently a Board Member for the Ontario Athletic Therapy Association. ​ Matt attended York University where he completed his BSc Specialized Honours Kinesiology and Health Science and his graduate certificate in Athletic Therapy. He has also received his Masters of Science in Physical Education from Canisius College. ​ He is a certified athletic therapist, national strength and conditioning association - certified strength and conditioning specialist. He has additional training in soft tissue release, advanced assessment and mobilizations. He currently is perusing his Certificate in Acupuncture and Massage. ​ He specializes in shoulder assessment and rehab, concussion management and is our orthotic and brace specialist. Registered Massage Therapist

​ Candace Lewis is a Registered Massage Therapist who has experience working in a multidisciplinary rehab clinic since early 2013. Her approach focuses on techniques such as trigger point therapy, joint mobilizations, and deep tissue therapy.

Since graduating from Trillium College with honours, the areas of specialization during her career have been in sports massage with experience in general muscle therapy, concussion management and injuries in both professional and aspiring athletes. She also works with motor vehicle accident victims with a focus on whiplash and shoulder injuries.

Candace is a deep tissue therapist who is able to tailor each treatment to provide a unique therapeutic experience that suits each individual’s needs.

Physiotherapist

Michael attended the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he completed a Bachelor of Health Science in Kinesiology (with distinction). During his undergraduate degree he worked closely with varsity level athletes and was awarded the “Student Trainer of the Year” award. Inspired by his experience as a student trainer, Michael went on to attend Queen’s University where he obtained a Master of Science in Physiotherapy degree.

Michael takes an evidence-based approach to assessing and treating his patients and diligently keeps up with the latest scientific literature to provide high quality care. In accordance with his patients’ needs and goals, he strongly believes in including education, therapeutic exercise, and self-management strategies as components of his treatment plan. Michael continuously educates himself on emerging ideas in the field of Orthopaedic Physiotherapy and has special interests in pain science and lower extremity tendinopathies. Being credentialed in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), Michael has advanced training in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal pain and has taken a multitude of continuing education courses to diversify his current skillset.
